BRIEF

The outcome was to create of necessary branding materials including a brand email signature, promo items, business cards and an invoice.

When receiving this brief I was a mix of excited and nervous for the same reason. I had never done branding before. However, I was looking forward to exploring how I want to express myself in the design world.

RESEARCH

I decided to focus more on researching brand identity, logos and visual branding elements instead of designers and artists. This approach allowed me to explore how design principles are applied in real world contexts. I wanted to express myself through my own work.

EXPERIMENTATION

Logo

The first thing I wanted to check off was the logo. I had never designed a logo before but I enjoyed it. I started with random ideas and just played around with different styles, changing the fonts and structure. I wanted the main logo to be an ‘S’ and ‘M’ for the brand name ‘Studio Morfitt’. My name is also Stephanie Morfitt, so it fits perfectly.

I liked the design of the middle logo in the top row, however I wasn’t keen on the font used. So, I played around with more bulkier types and settled on the Adelphi PE Variable. I also flipped it around so the ‘S’ is in front of the ‘M’ and not behind, as it does come first in the name.

DEVELOPMENT

BRAND BOARD

From there, I developed the logo further, trying different variations.

EVALUATIVE SUMMARY

For this brief we were asked to create branding for ourselves. I was excited to build a brand for myself and showcase my work. It has been something I have always wondered - what my branding would be. What my look would be as I constantly evolve. Though, I was nervous. I had never done branding before, not for myself or anyone else.

When researching, I didn’t look designers, instead researching logos and promo items generally. I didn’t want to be influenced by different artists and just wanted it to be all me.

I decided to create a whole brand instead of just me and my name. So I called my brand Studio Morfitt. It is a personal brand studio built around identity, evolution and creative authorship. The platform serves as both a platform and a mirror - presenting not just the work I create, but who I am as an artist and an individual.

To start the process, I designed a logo as I didn’t have one yet. I wanted to combine the ‘S’ and ‘M’ into a monogram for a logo mark. I started with this one because it is the logo people will see the most. I played around with different designs, combining the two letters until I found one I liked. I then made sure it was perfect and then based everything off of that logo, such as the fonts and style.

After designing the logos and putting a brand board together, everything else came very easily. I didn’t really experiment with different ideas and layouts for the email signature or the business cards, they were done quickly as I thought, at the time, that I didn’t think to worry about it too much because it had come easily.

The whole process was all digital, which is something I am not used to. I usually mix both digital and physical work to create designs, but it was enjoyable.

After everything, the last task was to design an exhibition poster to present your “Greatest Hits” throughout the year.

I really enjoyed this brief because I could do whatever I wanted as it was my own brand. However, looking back, I do think I should’ve put more into experimenting even though I am happy with the result and think my development is great. I think experimenting more could’ve opened up my perspective more. I also feel the same on my research. I should’ve looked at some artists that specialise in branding to get their outlook and techniques.
