BRIEF
The outcome for this brief was to create a six framed animation displaying a story. We were given six titles to work with.
INITIAL RESPONSES
INITIAL RESPONSES
Exercise 1.
For this exercise, we were given a 6 frame story board with two of the scenes already filled in. It was our jobs to create a narrative to fill in the rest.
I decided to create a story about someone having written a letter, to sealing and posting it, the letter arrives at their friends house and they’re excited, only to open it and realise it was a joke. They didn't take it well and threw it away. It was a fun activity to get us into creating narratives in such a small amount of frames.
Exercise 2.
In this task, we were given multiple images to choose from to create another 6 frame narrative.
After browsing through the images, image number 1 is what caught my eye. My first thought was that he was in a hospital and the man in bed is ill, but looking closer, he doesn’t seem to be. Thus, a narrative began to form in my mind and the rest came easily.
The narrative is;
Frame 1. The man in the bed (man A) has had a night on the town the evening before and is now suffering from a hangover. His friend (man B) had come to see him, to check on him as they smoke and tell each other about the night. The man in bed remembers a woman from last night. Either he doesn’t remember the important details about her or she never gave them to him. So she is a mystery to him.
Frame 2. All he has is a picture from the evening. (A random man had been taking polaroids and had asked the woman if she wanted one. once printed, she gave it to man A)
Frame 3. Man A begged is friend to ask around to see if anyone knew who she was. And so, his friend (man B) agreed and started to ask anyone he came across. (Across Frame 3, 4, 5)
Frame 6. A shot of the town. She could be anywhere. (this leaves the story in suspense. do they find the girl? Is she still in town? Does she remember man A?
I really enjoyed creating a story and adding the suspense.
RESEARCH
Collage Artists
Illustrators
Hannah Höch
Hannah Höch was a collage artist known for her photomontages during the DADA period. I knew I wanted to create something similar with less colour. I was inspired by her textures in her pieces of different paper.
Michelle Thompson
Michelle Thompson is also well known for her collages and unconventional topics. Her work is very unapologetic. Again, as well as photomontage, her use of textures all used in her compositions is what I am inspired by for this project.
Kavel Rafferty
I looked into Kavel Rafferty further because her compositions are unusual and surreal which is what I want to emulate and reflect in my work.
Briana Kranz
I decided to look into illustration also because I want there to be elements that are basic lines and shapes instead of complete photomontages. Thus, I came across Briana Kranz. Her illustrations are simple. I want to capture that within my own, however, I want my piece to be only black and white.
Beatrix Potter
I researched Beatrix Potter when I was attending college and was one of my main inspirations. When I first received this brief, her work in illustration was the first thing that I thought of. They were unusual, and again surreal, which is what I want my work to seem. However, her work is very detailed whereas I wish to keep my Illustrations simple.
EXPERIMENTATION
Story
After playing around and experimenting with different elements, a story started to take shape I knew I wanted to expand on the title "‘Risk” and that is why I decided to use shocked faces. This is how I imagined the story to go and planned as such.
Frame 1. Shocked faces. Only a few
Frame 2. The shot zooms out to reveal more shocked faces, the initial faces got smaller
Frame 3. The last shot of only the shocked faces, again zoomed out to reveal more. An audience. A crowd.
Frame 4. At the top of the frame, you can now see an acrobat swinging from the trapeze
Frame 5 (Climax). They let go of the trapeze and are now soaring through the air. Do they make it? Will they grab onto something?
Frame 6 (solution). A supporting “Actor swoops in to grab them.
My interpretation of the brief was for the animation to be almost a moving picture. So instead of creating multiple different scenes into one story, I focused on one scene only. I did this because we were only given six frames, which is a difficult task to fit a whole story into without context. I created the animation focusing on suspense. The viewer only sees the shocked faces first, not what is making them shocked. Then, frame by frame, more is revealed.
Collage
My first idea was to experiment with photomontage. I only used a small number of images that I had found and pulled the elements from the faces to rearrange and twist. I also added sketched elements to some of the designs. I wanted the portray the subjects as shocked as they are looking up at something risky.
Background
I wanted to keep the background simple by just scribbling black pencil and graphite. It created an old movie effect, like static that I leaned into to add to the, almost, creepy vibe.
By frame 4, when the suspense characters come in, there will be a highlighted area to emulate a spotlight.
CHARACTER DEVELOPMENT
These characters will be revealed in frame 4 as the ones that bring suspense. I wanted to keep them simple by having them remain as just sketches to fit in with the surreal theme and to show that it is a piece with not only photomontage, but also Illustration.
FURTHER DEVELOPMENT
For this development, I expanded my collages to give them more texture. I wanted it to portray an old fashioned movie. These will be used in my final piece to be used as an audience.
FINAL PIECE
FRONT COVER
BACK COVER
For the front cover, I used a development. I chose it because, not only is it my favourite, it does what it is supposed to. It gives the reader a snippet of the subject, something shocking, and it’s eerie. I kept the text white as to not overcomplicate things. Also because there is no colour, so having colour in the title would be strange. Overall, it turned out the way I imagined it and planned.
EVALUATIVE SUMMARY
The outcome for this brief was to create an animation portraying a narrative. The animation was six frames only. This is something that felt very daunting to me as I couldn’t comprehend creating a story, start, middle and end, into only six frames. Especially without context. So, I found the initial exercises very helpful. The second exercise where we were told to create a story using images provided was the most helpful and where I really got into creating a narrative.
We were told to include illustration, which I was happy to hear as illustration was my main focus in college, so I feel like I was ready for the task.

When it came to research, I researched collage artists such as Hannah Höch, and Kavel Rafferty. Their unusual designs inspired the tone of my work. I decided I wanted something more eerie.
I also researched illustration artists such as Briana Kranz for her simplistic designs, and Beatrix Potter for her unusual approach. However, I found Beatrix Potter was too detailed for what I wanted for my outcome.
I wanted my own collages to be unusual and almost freaky, so I focused on pulling out crucial elements from faces and either making them bigger or smaller, or putting them somewhere else. I also overlayed all of the compositions with the same textures I used for the background - pencil strokes.
For my ‘Risk Takers’ I decided to keep them as only sketches. I thought it fit with the themes and added another layer to the illustration. I wanted to use a range of techniques.
When it came to putting the scenes together, I decided to created a different background for each one. I wanted there to be a difference. whether it was different brush strokes, more shading and shadowing, more scribbles. I did this to give it an old movie effect - where you can see the static.
Overall, it came out how I imagined it. I kept the front cover simple but it works well. The white stands out well against the dark background. The cover does what it intends to by giving the viewer a snippet of what is to come, worry. The only thing I would do differently is blend the faces into the background more. Maybe add in more shadows around them. This is because you can see the edges of the compositions, so you can make out the harsh lines. However, my biggest achievement was creating an obvious scene without using words. At first, you don’t know what the people in the darkness are worried about, but as they get further and further away, the reason is revealed.
